A Brief History of AcupunctureThe history of acupuncture is wide. The word 'acupuncture' is derived from two different Latin words; one is 'acus' and the other 'pungere'. Acus stands for needle in English and Pungere means prick. Acupuncture is believed to be originated in China about two thousand years back. The technique has also evolved into different forms. There are certain techniques of acupuncture that do not use needles. People are made feel better via exposing them to vibrating objects and ultrasound. 'Huang Di Nei Jing' or the 'The Yellow Emperor's Classic of Internal Medicine' is known to be the first medical text in ancient Chinese that has discussed the history of acupuncture. The reason is that some archaeologists have discovered a mummy in the Alps that's accurately five thousand year old. The mummy is known to have similar acupuncture points in the body. The history of acupuncture moved on to Japan in the Sixth Century. Waichi Sugiyama in the seventeenth century tried to make this procedure painless for the user. Hence, he developed the insertion tube. The needle is inserted into this tube. The method is still prevalent. However, the U.S. could benefit from this marvelous technique only in the early 1980s. This was when the National Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine was establishment. This resulted into many schools that have been constructed. There were also people who wanted to pursue the technique as a profession. Despite all related to the history of acupuncture, most people were not convinced on the positive effects of varied forms of medication. Needles for acupuncture were considered as medical instruments only in the 1995 by the US Food & Drug Administration. These needles were considered both save and effective by the administration. In order to promote the technique of acupuncture in 1997, the National Institute of Health (NIH) stated that this is a unique and useful treatment for varied health conditions such as gastrointestinal, respiratory, throat, nose, ear, eye, muscular and nervous system disorders.
